Hip Hop Podcast Recommendation: What Had Happened Was

What Had Happened Was

Ok, so I know I'm an old hip hop nerd and that this will fall on a lot of deaf ears, but I'm going to suggest it anyway. What Had Happened Was has become my absolute favorite Hip Hop podcast (since The Combat Jack Show).

So here's the premise, Open Mike Eagle (who is a rapper, comedian and overall creative) interviews Prince Paul for an entire podcast season. If you don't know, Prince Paul was instrumental in the formation of De La Soul, Native Tongues, Stetsasonic, and on and on and on. He's had a very long and creative career in the world of Hip Hop and is the inventor of putting sketches on music albums (seriously). Because he only interviews Prince Paul for the entire season, this allows Open Mike Eagle (who is also a huge fan) to do a deep dive into Prince Paul's career and lasting effect on the genre.

What Had Happened Was is available on all streaming services and currently there are only two episodes left (there will be about 13, total). And there are hints of a season 2, which will probably take a totally different approach. Trust me, this podcast is getting all the praise for the content and the approach. As is expected, because Prince Paul is involved. Enjoy yourself!
