Library Mission and Policies

The mission of the OC Tech Library and the Health Sciences Media Center (HSMC), is to support the purposes and programs of Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College.  The library and HSMC operate with an emphasis on meeting the community’s need for a literate and technically-competent workforce and providing students with the knowledge, improving the skills and attitudes necessary for workplace competencies and supporting students intending to transfer students to other institutions of higher learning. 

The Library serves the College in accordance with the following purposes: 

§  To select, acquire, process and disseminate information in a variety of formats to the Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College community;  these formats include print, audio-visual, electronic and web-based information sources; 

§  To supply materials for cultural enrichment, self-education, research or recreation to students, faculty and staff of Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College.

§  To inform the campus community of the availability of these materials and to provide both formal and information instruction of the use of these materials;

§  To provide Library resources to the community at large when such services do not interfere with service to the campus population;

§  To maintain on-going systematic (formal and informal) evaluation of service and materials;

§  To cooperate with other agencies in the total process of fulfilling information needs.

 

Policy 2.1 of the Library's Policy Manual

The Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College Area Commission has adopted the following policy for the Library and Health Sciences Media Center to encourage an atmosphere conducive to appropriate use of services and facilities. 

 

§  The following actions are prohibited on Library property: 

·         Selling and/or soliciting for services, money or items

·         Distributing or posting printed materials/literature that have not been approved by the College

·         Possessing or consuming alcohol or illegal drugs or being under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs

·         Smoking or other uses of tobacco

·         Consuming food or any beverage in any type container or bringing in packaged or unpackaged food or beverages

·         Placing feet/legs on tables or feet in chairs

·         Not wearing shoes or shirt, or wearing clothes unbuttoned or unzipped

·         Bringing animals into the Library other than assistance animals

·         Any loud, unreasonable, and/or disturbing noises created by persons, electronic devices, or cell phones

·         Any behavior that is disruptive to library use

·         Intentionally damaging, destroying or stealing any Library property, or a patron’s or employee’s property

·         Removing Library materials from the premises without using established lending procedures

·         Playing cards or games of any kind (including computer games)

·         Moving tables, chairs or other furniture (unless approved by staff)

·         More than four persons in a study room

·         Carrying weapons of any type

·         Bringing children under the age of 15 into the library (exceptions: ID production, selecting children’s books)

·         Engaging in disorderly conduct of any kind, fighting or challenging to fight or using obscene/offensive words likely to provoke violence

·         Any other illegal acts or conduct in violation of Federal, State, or local law, ordinance or regulation

·         Intentionally damaging, destroying or stealing any Library property, or a patron’s or employee’s property

·         Removing Library materials from the premises without using established lending procedures

Library Policy 20.2

Library card:   Your student ID is your library card.  It is required to check out books or to use materials on Reserve.

Circulation policies: 

Circulating collection:   Up to 5 books for 4 weeks/1 renewal period

Reference collection:    Does not circulate; books may be used in-house only.

Journals, newspapers:  Do not circulate; may be used in-house only.

Audio-visuals:             Popular DVDs circulate for one week.

Laptops:                     Two week checkout; one two-week renewal.   $25/day overdue fine.  Student must sign loan agreement and is financially responsible for cost of laptop if lost, stolen or damaged.

Fines:     $.10/day per item

Copier:   $.10/page

Printing from PC:     Requires a PRINT CARD, which can be purchased in the BOOKSTORE only.
